What is hybrid fitness racing?

Hybrid fitness racing is a competitive event format that combines running with functional fitness stations — think rowing, sled pushes, wall balls and loaded carries — completed back-to-back against the clock. It sits between a running race and a fitness competition: you need an engine to handle the running, and enough all-round strength to move through the stations without stalling. No single specialism wins; pacing, transitions and grit decide your time.

The format has grown rapidly in the UK because it's measurable, beginner-accessible and genuinely social — most athletes enter with their gym or a training partner rather than alone.

How a Hybrid NW race works

Hybrid NW is a UK hybrid fitness race series. Every race is nine stations on one continuous clock, with 600m runs between stations and a 200m sprint finish:

  • 01 · Assault Bike — 50 cal
  • 02 · Wall Balls — 100 reps
  • 03 · Row — 1000 m
  • 04 · Burpee Broad Jumps — 100 m
  • 05 · Loaded Lunges — 100 m
  • 06 · DB Snatch — 100 reps
  • 07 · Farmers Carry — 200 m
  • 08 · SkiErg — 1000 m
  • 09 · Sled Push — 60 m

There are no breaks — your finish time is the clock. Full movement standards and scaled weights for every division are on the format page, and the official rule book is available as a PDF download.

The seven divisions

Everyone races the same course; weights scale by division so the race is achievable for anyone who trains around three times a week.

  • Male Solo & Female Solo — race the whole course alone.
  • Male, Female & Mixed Doubles — two athletes share the work at every station, splitting reps however they like.
  • Tribrid — a three-person tag team: one athlete on the course at a time, full relay strategy across all nine stations.
  • Hyteens — a junior division pairing a 13–15 year old with an adult, with scaled weights and a separate heat.

Do I need to be elite?

No. Around 40% of every Hybrid NW field is first-timers. If you can run 5k and lift a kettlebell, you can finish. Doubles is the most popular entry point for first-timers because you share the load — and the pacing decisions — with a partner.
